Tips and Information
Getting Started
Log each shift as soon as you can after it happens. It is easy to forget details if you wait a week. Start with today's date and the organization name. Even a rough hour count is better than nothing. You can always edit an entry later by clicking on it in your log.
Not sure what counts as volunteer time? Most hands-on work at a nonprofit, charity event, school service project, or community group qualifies. Travel time usually does not count unless it is part of the service (like driving supplies to a shelter).
Common Mistakes
Forgetting to log hours right away is the number one problem. People remember they volunteered but not how long they stayed. Set a phone reminder after each shift. Another common issue is rounding too much. If you worked 2 hours and 20 minutes, log 2.33 hours instead of rounding to 3. Being accurate looks better on applications.
Some volunteers skip logging small shifts. A 30-minute phone bank or a quick cleanup still counts. Those small amounts add up over a semester.
Using Your Report
When a school or employer asks for proof of volunteer work, click "Print Report" and save it as a PDF. Add your name at the top and attach it to your application. The report shows your total hours, which organizations you helped, and what activities you did. If your school uses a specific form, use ServeLog as your personal record to fill it out accurately.
Keep a backup. Since ServeLog saves data only in your browser, printing or exporting your data regularly protects against accidental data loss. Export the JSON file once a month and store it somewhere safe.
